Biographical/Historical note

Gil Cuadros grew up in Montebello, California. In 1988, after being diagnosed with HIV, he began taking writing classes at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. His talent was recognized early, and he received grants from the Brody Arts Fund and PEN Center West. In 1994 Cuadros published his only book, City of God, which offered his unique perspective of being a gay Chicano in Los Angeles. He died at the age of 34 on August 29, 1996, of complications due to AIDS.
