This collection includes photographic slides relating to James Tartan's short films about Chicano artists. It also includes the title cards for his film Murals of Aztlan.

Biographical / Historical

James Tartan was born on September 11, 1931 in Youngstown, Ohio. He was an actor, playing small roles on television from the 1960s into the 1990s. He also directed short films and publc service announcements. He died in Los Angeles on November 26, 2010.

Separated Materials

The bulk of the collection, consisting of 16mm film, audio elements, and videotapes, has been transferred to the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Films represented include: Messages in Clay; Treasures of Mexico; Walk the First Step; The Gang; Low Rider; El Carro Nuevo; Los Four; various public service announcements; Have Another Drink, Ese; Under One Roof; Physical Exam; Murals of Aztlan.
