Biographical / Historical
The Latino Museum of Art, History, and Culture was a museum in Downtown Los Angeles. Originally funded by the California Legislature in 1987, the museum was in development for nearly a decade nefore being officially dedicated on February 14, 1996. In June 1998 it finally opened its doors with an exhibition on Cuban-born, Chicago-based painter Paul Sierra, alienating many in the Los Angeles Chicano artistic community. In August 2000 the museum closed its location on Main Street. In July 2002, the museum reopened in a temporary space on Los Angeles Street with an exhibition on Ramses Noriega, a Chicano painter based in Fresno. In 2007 the museum joined with the Latino Theater Company in the Los Angeles Theatre [sic] Center on Spring Street.

The Latino Museum of Art, History, and Culture was a museum in Downtown Los Angeles that operated from 1998-2007, and sought to showcase artistic and cultural accomplishments of Latinos throughout the hemisphere. The collection consists of administrative records, periodicals, photographs, audiovisual material and books.

Materials are stored OFF-SITE at SRLF. All requests to access special collections materials must be made two weeks in advance. Please contact the CSRC Library for paging information.
