Scope and Contents

The collection consists largely of material relating to exhibitions put on by the organization, as well as a small number of administrative files. There are also audio-visual materials apparently related to a variety of community initiatives, though these will require further processing to be viewed. Perhaps the centerpiece of the collection are the "Atelier prints," approximately 180 large-format silkscreen prints by different artists.

Biographical / Historical

Self Help Graphics and Art was founded in 1970 in Boyle Heights by Sister Karan Boccalero, Carlos Bueno, Antonio Ibanez, and Frank Hernandez. Its mission is to drive the creation of new work by Chicanx and Latinx artists through multiple art forms, including fine art printmaking.

    The Murals of East Los Angeles (16mm film by by Humberto R. Rivera and Heather R. Howell) - transferred to UCLA Film and Television Archive

    Processing Information

    This collection was initially processed by Colin Gunckel between 2004 and 2005. In 2013 Cristal Gutierrez Alba updated the physical arrangement and description of the collection. In 2018 the finding aid was revised and transferred to ArchivesSpace by Doug Johnson. Digital objects were added by Cira Sandoval in 2019.
